How to uninstall TeamViewer on Mac completely

TeamViewer installs more than the app: a background helper that runs with administrator rights, a plug-in for the macOS sign-in window, settings, caches and logs. Its own uninstaller removes them — here is how to use it, and how to check that nothing is left.

Uninstaller: a list of apps sorted by size with when each was last opened, Google Chrome selected with its app and cache sizes
  1. Open MacWashing and choose Uninstaller in the sidebar.
  2. Click Show Apps and check TeamViewer in the list.
  3. Click Remove and confirm. Files that may be yours are listed as Possible and stay unchecked.

Uninstall TeamViewer with its own uninstaller

In the current TeamViewer app, the uninstaller starts when you move the app to the Trash:

  1. Quit TeamViewer: choose TeamViewer › Quit TeamViewer in the menu bar.
  2. Open Finder › Applications and drag TeamViewer to the Trash.
  3. In the window that opens, check Also delete configuration files if you want to remove your settings too.
  4. Click Uninstall, then OK. Enter your administrator password if macOS asks for it.

If you have TeamViewer Classic

In TeamViewer (Classic), the uninstaller is in the settings. TeamViewer warns that dragging the Classic app to the Trash can leave configuration files and other remnants.

  1. Open TeamViewer and choose TeamViewer › Preferences in the menu bar.
  2. Go to the Advanced tab and scroll to the bottom of Advanced Settings.
  3. Check Also delete configuration files if you want to remove your settings too.
  4. Click Uninstall and confirm.

TeamViewer QuickSupport doesn’t install anything in the background: if you copied it to Applications, just move it to the Trash.

What TeamViewer leaves behind

If you didn’t delete the configuration files, or removed the app another way, check these places. The first ones are in the Library folder inside your home folder:

  • ~/Library/Application Support/TeamViewer — TeamViewer’s data.
  • ~/Library/Caches/com.teamviewer.TeamViewer — the cache.
  • ~/Library/Preferences/com.teamviewer.TeamViewer.plist and ~/Library/Preferences/com.teamviewer.teamviewer.preferences.plist — settings.
  • ~/Library/Logs/TeamViewer — logs.
  • /Library/Application Support/TeamViewer — files TeamViewer installed for all users of the Mac.
  • /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.teamviewer.Helper.plist — the background helper that runs with administrator rights.
  • /Library/Security/SecurityAgentPlugins/TeamViewerAuthPlugin.bundle — TeamViewer’s plug-in for the macOS sign-in window.

Remove the leftovers by hand

  1. In Finder, choose Go › Go to Folder (Shift-Command-G), type a path from the list above and press Return.
  2. Move the folder or file to the Trash. Files in /Library need your administrator password.
  3. Repeat for the other paths.
  4. Restart your Mac, so the background helper is no longer running, then empty the Trash.

TeamViewer isn’t the only app that leaves files behind: see how to uninstall apps on Mac completely.

Check the permissions in System Settings

For remote control, TeamViewer asks for access to the screen and other parts of the Mac. After uninstalling, open System Settings › Privacy & Security and look at Accessibility, Screen & System Audio Recording and Full Disk Access. If TeamViewer is still listed, select it and click the minus button.

With MacWashing, it’s one click

Uninstaller: a list of apps sorted by size with when each was last opened, Google Chrome selected with its app and cache sizes

The Uninstaller in MacWashing knows the files TeamViewer creates — in your Library folder and in the system folders — and removes them together with the app, background helper and sign-in plug-in included.

Questions and answers

Will MacWashing delete my own files when it removes TeamViewer?

No. The Uninstaller checks only what belongs to the app: its settings, caches, logs and background items. Folders that may hold your own files are listed as Possible and stay unchecked until you check them yourself, and apps go to the Trash by default, so you can put them back.

What if TeamViewer is still running?

MacWashing waits for it to quit, or quits it at your request, and only then removes its files.

Is it free to uninstall TeamViewer with MacWashing?

Yes, within the free trial: System Junk and the Uninstaller free up to 25 GB in total, with no account or card needed.

Should I check «Also delete configuration files»?

Check it for a full cleanup or a fresh reinstall. If you leave it unchecked, your TeamViewer settings stay on the Mac and are used again when you reinstall.

Does uninstalling TeamViewer delete my account and contacts?

No. Your account and your Computers & Contacts list are kept on TeamViewer’s servers. If you won’t use this Mac with TeamViewer again, remove it from that list in your account.

Why does TeamViewer ask for my password when I uninstall it?

TeamViewer installs a background helper and a sign-in plug-in for all users of the Mac, in folders only an administrator can change. Removing them needs the same rights.
