How to uninstall Anaconda on Mac completely
Anaconda is not one app. It is a whole Python installation in a folder in your home folder, plus Anaconda Navigator, lines in your shell profile that start conda in every Terminal window, and a few settings folders. Your conda environments usually live inside the Anaconda folder, so they go with it. Here is how to save them first and then remove the rest.

- Open MacWashing and choose Uninstaller in the sidebar.
- Click Show Apps and check Anaconda-Navigator in the list.
- Click Remove and confirm. Files that may be yours are listed as Possible and stay unchecked.

Export your environments first
Removing Anaconda deletes every environment inside its folder, with all the packages installed in them. If you will need an environment again, save its description to a file. You can recreate it from that file later.
- Open Terminal and run
conda info --envsto see your environments and where they are. - For each one you want to keep, run
conda env export --name <ENV_NAME> > <ENV_NAME>.yaml. The file is saved in the folder Terminal is in — your home folder, unless you changed it. - If you saved notebooks or scripts inside the Anaconda folder, copy them somewhere else.
Environments outside the Anaconda folder are not removed with it. Anaconda suggests removing them before you uninstall, with conda remove --prefix <PATH_TO_ENV_DIRECTORY> --all.
Uninstall Anaconda with its script
Anaconda Distribution 2025.06 and newer comes with an uninstall script, and Anaconda’s documentation describes it as the way to uninstall.
- In Terminal, run
conda deactivate, so(base)disappears from the prompt. - Run
conda info --baseto see where Anaconda is installed. - Run the
uninstall.shscript in that folder, for example~/anaconda3/uninstall.sh. For an installation in/opt/anaconda3(made with the .pkg installer), runsudo -E /opt/anaconda3/uninstall.sh. - Close and reopen Terminal:
(base)should no longer appear in the prompt.
To remove caches, settings and ~/.conda too, add options: ~/anaconda3/uninstall.sh --remove-caches --remove-config-files user --remove-user-data. Anaconda doesn’t recommend these options if you have more than one conda installation on the Mac.
Older versions: remove Anaconda by hand
If there is no uninstall.sh in the Anaconda folder, your version is older than 2025.06. These are Anaconda’s steps for it:
- In Terminal, run
conda activate, thenconda init --reverse --all. This removes conda’s lines from all your shell profiles. Do it before deleting the folder: the command needs conda. - Delete the Anaconda folder — the path
conda info --baseshowed you, such as~/anaconda3. In Finder, drag it to the Trash. In Terminal,rm -rf ~/anaconda3deletes it at once and can’t be undone. - Optionally, delete conda’s settings and data:
~/.condarc,~/.condaand~/.continuum. Keep~/.condarcif you changed conda’s settings and plan to reinstall. - Close and reopen Terminal.
Anaconda notes that uninstalling may leave shortcuts behind. If Anaconda-Navigator is still in Finder › Applications, move it to the Trash.
What Anaconda leaves behind
All of these are in your home folder. Most are hidden because their names start with a dot:
~/anaconda3or~/opt/anaconda3— Anaconda itself: Python, conda, the base environment and your environments in itsenvsfolder.~/.conda— conda’s data for your user. It can hold environments too.~/.condarc— conda’s settings, such as channels.~/.continuum— data of older Anaconda versions.~/.anaconda— data of Anaconda Navigator and other Anaconda tools.~/.jupyter— Jupyter settings. Keep it if you use Jupyter with another Python.~/.bash_profile-anaconda3.bak— a copy of your shell profile that the installer saved before adding conda’s lines.
Your environments, and anything you saved there yourself, are inside ~/anaconda3 (or ~/opt/anaconda3) and ~/.conda. Export the environments you need before deleting these folders.
Remove the leftovers by hand
- In Finder, choose Go › Go to Folder (Shift-Command-G), type a path from the list above and press Return.
- Move the folder or file to the Trash.
- Repeat for the other paths. Hidden folders like
~/.condaopen with Go to Folder too. - Restart your Mac, then empty the Trash.
If a new Terminal window still shows (base) or an error about conda, conda’s lines are still in your shell profile. Open ~/.zshrc (or ~/.bash_profile) in a text editor and delete the block between # >>> conda initialize >>> and # <<< conda initialize <<<.

With MacWashing, it’s one click

The Uninstaller in MacWashing knows the folders Anaconda creates in your home folder and removes them together with Anaconda Navigator. Folders that may hold your own files, like your environments, are listed as Possible and stay unchecked until you check them yourself.

Questions and answers
Will MacWashing delete my own files when it removes Anaconda?
No. The Uninstaller checks only what belongs to the app: its settings, caches, logs and background items. Folders that may hold your own files are listed as Possible and stay unchecked until you check them yourself, and apps go to the Trash by default, so you can put them back.
What if Anaconda is still running?
MacWashing waits for it to quit, or quits it at your request, and only then removes its files.
Is it free to uninstall Anaconda with MacWashing?
Yes, within the free trial: System Junk and the Uninstaller free up to 25 GB in total, with no account or card needed.
Will uninstalling Anaconda delete my notebooks and scripts?
Not if they are outside the Anaconda folder: uninstalling doesn’t touch your Documents or project folders. Files you saved inside ~/anaconda3 are deleted with it.
How do I get my environments back after reinstalling?
Install Anaconda again, then run conda env create -f <ENV_NAME>.yaml for each file you exported. Conda downloads the packages again.
Why does Terminal still show (base) or a conda error after I deleted Anaconda?
The folder was deleted, but conda’s lines are still in your shell profile. Remove the conda initialize block from ~/.zshrc or ~/.bash_profile, then open a new Terminal window.
