How to uninstall DeepL on Mac completely

The DeepL app for Mac runs from the menu bar and comes with a Finder extension. Deleting the app removes both, but its settings, cache and data stay in your Library folder. Here is how to remove all of it.

Uninstaller: a list of apps sorted by size with when each was last opened, Google Chrome selected with its app and cache sizes
  1. Open MacWashing and choose Uninstaller in the sidebar.
  2. Click Show Apps and check DeepL in the list.
  3. Click Remove and confirm. Files that may be yours are listed as Possible and stay unchecked.

Uninstall DeepL the way DeepL describes

DeepL has no separate uninstaller. Its support site says to quit the app first and then delete it in Finder or Launchpad:

  1. Click the DeepL icon in the menu bar at the top of the screen and quit the app.
  2. Open Finder › Applications and drag DeepL to the Trash.
  3. Enter your administrator password if macOS asks for it.

What DeepL leaves behind

Check these places, all in the Library folder inside your home folder:

  • ~/Library/Application Support/DeepL — the app’s data.
  • ~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.linguee.DeepL — data shared between the app and its extension.
  • ~/Library/Containers/com.linguee.DeepLCopyTranslator.DeepLTranslatorFinderExt — the Finder extension’s container.
  • ~/Library/Caches/com.linguee.DeepLCopyTranslator — the cache.
  • ~/Library/Preferences/com.linguee.DeepLCopyTranslator.plist — settings.
  • ~/Library/HTTPStorages/com.linguee.DeepLCopyTranslator — network data and cookies.

Remove the leftovers by hand

  1. In Finder, choose Go › Go to Folder (Shift-Command-G), type a path from the list above and press Return.
  2. Move the folder or file to the Trash.
  3. Repeat for the other paths.
  4. Restart your Mac, then empty the Trash.

With MacWashing, it’s one click

Uninstaller: a list of apps sorted by size with when each was last opened, Google Chrome selected with its app and cache sizes

The Uninstaller in MacWashing knows the files DeepL creates in your Library folder and removes them together with the app. Folders that may hold your own files are listed as Possible and stay unchecked until you check them yourself.

Questions and answers

Will MacWashing delete my own files when it removes DeepL?

No. The Uninstaller checks only what belongs to the app: its settings, caches, logs and background items. Folders that may hold your own files are listed as Possible and stay unchecked until you check them yourself, and apps go to the Trash by default, so you can put them back.

What if DeepL is still running?

MacWashing waits for it to quit, or quits it at your request, and only then removes its files.

Is it free to uninstall DeepL with MacWashing?

Yes, within the free trial: System Junk and the Uninstaller free up to 25 GB in total, with no account or card needed.

Does uninstalling DeepL cancel my DeepL Pro subscription?

No. The subscription belongs to your DeepL account, not to the app. Manage or cancel it in your account on deepl.com.

DeepL stopped working. Should I reinstall it?

DeepL’s support site suggests it: uninstall the app, then download the latest version from deepl.com and install it again. DeepL for Mac needs macOS 14 or later.

Will the DeepL shortcuts keep working after I uninstall it?

No. The shortcuts belong to the app, so they stop working once it is deleted. The DeepL website keeps working in your browser.
