How to uninstall Grammarly on Mac completely
Grammarly for Mac runs in the menu bar and starts with your Mac, so it is often still open when you try to delete it. Here is how to remove it the way Grammarly describes, what it leaves in your Library folder, and why the browser extension needs a separate step.

- Open MacWashing and choose Uninstaller in the sidebar.
- Click Show Apps and check Grammarly Desktop in the list.
- Click Remove and confirm. Files that may be yours are listed as Possible and stay unchecked.

Uninstall Grammarly the way Grammarly describes
- Click the Grammarly icon in the menu bar and choose Quit.
- Open Finder › Applications.
- Drag Grammarly Desktop to the Trash.
According to Grammarly, the app’s background processes notice that it has been deleted and remove themselves and their files.
If macOS says Grammarly can’t be moved because it’s open
Grammarly’s support site suggests these steps:
- Click the Grammarly icon in the menu bar, choose Settings…, and in the Customization tab turn off Launch at startup.
- Quit Grammarly from its menu bar icon.
- Choose Apple menu › Restart, and don’t reopen your apps after the restart.
- Drag Grammarly Desktop from Applications to the Trash again.
What Grammarly leaves behind
Check these places, all in the Library folder inside your home folder:
~/Library/Application Support/com.grammarly.ProjectLlama— the app’s data.~/Library/Group Containers/W8F64X92K3.com.grammarly.ProjectLlama— data shared between Grammarly’s parts.~/Library/Caches/com.grammarly.ProjectLlama— the cache.~/Library/Preferences/com.grammarly.ProjectLlama.plist— settings.~/Library/HTTPStorages/com.grammarly.ProjectLlama— network data and cookies.~/Library/WebKit/com.grammarly.ProjectLlamaand~/Library/WebKit/com.grammarly.GRLlamaOnboarding— data of the app’s web windows, such as sign-in.
Remove the leftovers by hand
- In Finder, choose Go › Go to Folder (Shift-Command-G), type a path from the list above and press Return.
- Move the folder or file to the Trash.
- Repeat for the other paths.
- Restart your Mac, then empty the Trash.
Grammarly isn’t the only app that leaves files behind: see how to uninstall apps on Mac completely.
Remove the browser extension separately
The browser extension is not part of Grammarly for Mac, so deleting the app doesn’t remove it. Grammarly describes it this way:
- Chrome: right-click the Grammarly icon on the toolbar and choose Remove from Chrome.
- Safari: turn the extension off in Safari’s settings, under Extensions, then open Finder › Applications and move Grammarly for Safari to the Trash.
With MacWashing, it’s one click

The Uninstaller in MacWashing knows the files Grammarly creates in your Library folder and removes them together with the app.

Questions and answers
Will MacWashing delete my own files when it removes Grammarly?
No. The Uninstaller checks only what belongs to the app: its settings, caches, logs and background items. Folders that may hold your own files are listed as Possible and stay unchecked until you check them yourself, and apps go to the Trash by default, so you can put them back.
What if Grammarly is still running?
MacWashing waits for it to quit, or quits it at your request, and only then removes its files.
Is it free to uninstall Grammarly with MacWashing?
Yes, within the free trial: System Junk and the Uninstaller free up to 25 GB in total, with no account or card needed.
Will uninstalling Grammarly delete my documents?
No. Grammarly for Mac checks text in your other apps. Deleting it doesn’t touch your files. Documents you saved in Grammarly’s editor stay in your Grammarly account.
Does uninstalling Grammarly cancel my subscription?
No. The subscription belongs to your Grammarly account, not to the app. Manage or cancel it in your account on grammarly.com.
Can I reinstall Grammarly later?
Yes. Download it again from grammarly.com and sign in. Your account and settings stored online come back.
