How to download and install Webex on Mac

The Webex app for Mac brings Cisco’s meetings, messaging and calling together, and it comes from Webex’s website with separate installers for Apple Silicon and Intel. Here is which one to pick, how to install it and which permissions to give so your first meeting works.

Or the installer straight from the developer’s server:

Open Terminal (Applications › Utilities) and run:

brew install --cask webex

Homebrew downloads the app from the developer’s server, checks the file and puts the app in Applications.

Which installer to download

Webex has separate installers for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. To check your chip:

  1. Choose Apple menu › About This Mac.
  2. If you see Chip with Apple M1, M2 or later, take the installer for Apple Silicon. If you see Processor with Intel, take the one for Intel.

The current Webex app needs macOS 13 Ventura or later. If your company uses Webex, it may install the app for you. Otherwise download it only from webex.com.

How to install Webex

  1. Open Webex.dmg in your Downloads folder.
  2. In the window that opens, drag Webex to the Applications folder.
The Webex disk image window: Webex and the Applications folder to drag it to
  1. Eject the Webex disk: click the eject button next to it in the Finder sidebar.
  2. Open Webex from Applications and click Open when macOS asks about an app downloaded from the internet.
  3. Sign in with your email address, or join a meeting from its link without signing in.

Webex also offers .pkg installers for companies that set up many Macs at once. At home, the .dmg is all you need.

What to set up after installing

macOS asks for each permission the first time Webex needs it. If you clicked Don’t Allow by mistake, turn it on in System Settings › Privacy & Security:

  • Camera and Microphone: turn on Webex.
  • Screen & System Audio Recording: turn on Webex to share your screen, then quit and reopen Webex.
  • Accessibility: only if you let others control your screen during a meeting.
  • Opening at login. If you don’t want Webex to start with your Mac, turn it off in System Settings › General › Login Items.
  • The installer. Move Webex.dmg from Downloads to the Trash once Webex runs.

If Webex won’t install or open

  • «Webex is damaged and can’t be opened». The download was incomplete. Delete it and download the installer for your chip again from Webex’s website.
  • Webex won’t start on an older Mac. Check your macOS version in About This Mac: the current app needs macOS 13 or later.
  • Others can’t see your screen. Check Screen & System Audio Recording above and restart Webex after turning it on.
  • Nothing helps. Remove Webex completely, with its caches and settings, and install it again: see how to uninstall Webex on Mac.

Questions and answers

Is Webex for Mac free?

The app and joining meetings are free. Webex also has a free plan for hosting, with limits on meeting length and size. Paid plans lift them.

Do I need a Webex account to join a meeting?

No. A meeting link lets you join as a guest with just your name and email. To host meetings and use messaging, sign up with your email address.

Can I join a Webex meeting without installing the app?

Yes. A meeting link can open in the browser. The app gives better video, screen sharing and fewer problems with sound.
