How to download and install Loom on Mac

Loom records your screen, camera and voice and shares the video by link. The Mac app comes from Loom’s own website. Here is which version to take, how to install it and which permissions macOS needs before your first recording.

Or the installer straight from the developer’s server:

Open Terminal (Applications › Utilities) and run:

brew install --cask loom

Homebrew downloads the app from the developer’s server, checks the file and puts the app in Applications.

Which version to download

The current Loom desktop app needs macOS 15 Sequoia or later, and one file works on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Check your macOS version in Apple menu › About This Mac.

On an older Mac, use the Need to download an older version? link on Loom’s download page: the previous desktop app runs on macOS 12.3 and later and has separate files for Apple Silicon and Intel. Loom also records from a Chrome extension, without the desktop app.

You need a Loom account to record: sign up on loom.com or in the app. Download Loom only from loom.com.

How to install Loom

  1. Open Loom.dmg in your Downloads folder.
  2. In the window that opens, drag Loom to the Applications folder.
The Loom disk image window: Loom and the Applications folder to drag it to
  1. Eject the Loom disk: click the eject button next to it in the Finder sidebar.
  2. Open Loom from Applications and click Open when macOS asks about an app downloaded from the internet.
  3. Sign in to your Loom account. Loom appears as an icon in the menu bar.

What to set up after the first launch

macOS asks for each permission the first time Loom needs it. If you clicked Don’t Allow by mistake, turn it on in System Settings › Privacy & Security:

  • Screen & System Audio Recording: turn on Loom to record your screen, then quit and reopen Loom.
  • Camera and Microphone: turn on Loom for the camera bubble and your voice.
  • Free space. Loom keeps parts of a recording on the Mac until the upload finishes. Loom’s help asks for at least 16 GB free and about 10% of the disk free, or a recording may stop partway through.
  • Opening at login. If you don’t want Loom to start with your Mac, turn it off in System Settings › General › Login Items. Move Loom.dmg from Downloads to the Trash once Loom runs.

If Loom won’t install or record

  • Loom won’t open. Check your macOS version in About This Mac: the current app needs macOS 15 or later. On an older Mac, take the older version from Loom’s download page.
  • The recording is black or has no sound. Check Screen & System Audio Recording, Camera and Microphone above and restart Loom after turning them on.
  • Loom keeps misbehaving. Make sure every recording has uploaded, then remove Loom completely and install it again: see how to uninstall Loom on Mac.

Questions and answers

Is Loom for Mac free?

The app is free to download, and Loom has a free plan with limits on recordings. Paid plans remove the limits and add features for teams.

Do I need an account to use Loom?

Yes. Loom saves your videos to your Loom library in the cloud, so you sign in before your first recording. People you share a video with can watch it by link.

Where does Loom keep my videos?

In your Loom library online. While a video uploads, its parts stay on your Mac, so don’t delete Loom’s files until the upload is finished.
