How to download and install Microsoft Edge on Mac
Microsoft Edge for Mac is a free browser built on Chromium, and it comes from Microsoft’s website as one installer package for every Mac. Here is how to install it, bring over what you had in another browser and set it up after the first launch.

- One file for Apple Silicon and Intel
- Free
Or the installer straight from the developer’s server:
The links go to the developer’s website (explore.microsoft.com, go.microsoft.com). MacWashing is not affiliated with the developer and keeps no installers.
Open Terminal (Applications › Utilities) and run:
brew install --cask microsoft-edgeHomebrew downloads the app from the developer’s server, checks the file and puts the app in Applications.
No Homebrew yet? How to install Homebrew: one command from brew.sh.
Before you download
Microsoft’s Mac installer works on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, so there is no version to choose. You don’t need a Microsoft account to use Edge: signing in only syncs your favorites, passwords and history between devices.
Edge needs macOS 13 Ventura or later. Its installer is a .pkg that runs with administrator rights, so download it only from microsoft.com.
How to install Microsoft Edge
- Open the downloaded
MicrosoftEdge-….pkgin your Downloads folder.

- Click Continue, then Install.
- Enter your Mac password and click Install Software.
- When the installer says it is done, click Close. Edge appears in Applications and opens.
Edge starts with a short setup: you can sign in, import data from another browser or skip all of it.
What to set up after the first launch
- Favorites and passwords. Open Edge’s Settings, go to Profiles and choose Import browser data, then pick Safari or Chrome.
- Sync. Sign in with a Microsoft account to get favorites, passwords and history from your other devices.
- Default browser. System Settings › Desktop & Dock › Default web browser.
- Updates. Edge updates itself. Settings › About Microsoft Edge shows the version and checks for a new one.
- The installer. Move the
.pkgfrom Downloads to the Trash once Edge runs.
If Edge won’t install or open
- The installer stops with an error. Download the
.pkgagain from Microsoft’s website and make sure you are signed in to macOS as an administrator. - Edge won’t install on an older Mac. Check your macOS version in About This Mac: Edge needs macOS 13 or later.
- Nothing helps. Remove Edge completely, with its profile and caches, and install it again: see how to uninstall Microsoft Edge on Mac.
Alternatives to Microsoft Edge
Keep your Mac tidy

Browsers build up cache fast. System Junk in MacWashing finds browser and app caches and shows how much space they take, and the Uninstaller removes Edge with its files if you ever switch.
