How to uninstall Insomnia on Mac completely

Insomnia keeps its data, caches, logs and updater files in your Library folder, and deleting the app leaves all of them. Before you remove it, check where your projects are stored: some live in the cloud or in Git, but Local Vault and Scratch Pad projects exist only on this Mac.

  1. Open MacWashing and choose Uninstaller in the sidebar.
  2. Click Show Apps and check Insomnia in the list.
  3. Click Remove and confirm. Files that may be yours are listed as Possible and stay unchecked.

Before you start: export what is only on this Mac

Insomnia stores each project according to its storage type. Cloud Sync projects are kept on Insomnia’s servers and Git Sync projects in your Git repository. Local Vault and Scratch Pad projects are stored only on your Mac, so export them first.

  1. Open Insomnia, then open Preferences and go to Data.
  2. Click Export all data and choose a format. Insomnia v5 can be imported back into Insomnia later.
  3. Save the file somewhere outside the Insomnia folders.

You can also export a single project or API Collection from its own menu. To see the raw data files, choose Help › Show App Data Folder.

Delete Insomnia in Finder

  1. Quit Insomnia: right-click its icon in the Dock and choose Quit.
  2. Open Finder › Applications and drag Insomnia to the Trash.

This removes the app only. Its data, caches and settings stay in your Library folder.

What Insomnia leaves behind

All of these are in the Library folder inside your home folder:

  • ~/Library/Application Support/Insomnia — Insomnia’s local data, with its caches inside.
  • ~/Library/Logs/Insomnia — logs.
  • ~/Library/Caches/com.insomnia.app — the cache.
  • ~/Library/Caches/com.insomnia.app.ShipIt — files of the built-in updater.
  • ~/Library/Preferences/com.insomnia.app.plist and ~/Library/Preferences/com.insomnia.app.helper.plist — settings.
  • ~/Library/Cookies/com.insomnia.app.binarycookies — cookies.
  • ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.insomnia.app.savedState — the saved window state.

~/Library/Application Support/Insomnia holds your local projects, collections, requests and environments in insomnia.*.db files. They are your work, not leftovers: export them as above, or keep the folder, before you delete it.

Remove the leftovers by hand

  1. In Finder, choose Go › Go to Folder (Shift-Command-G), type a path from the list above and press Return.
  2. Move the folder or file to the Trash.
  3. Repeat for the other paths.
  4. Restart your Mac, then empty the Trash.

With MacWashing, it’s one click

Uninstaller: a list of apps sorted by size with when each was last opened, Google Chrome selected with its app and cache sizes

The Uninstaller in MacWashing knows the files Insomnia creates in your Library folder and removes them together with the app, the updater files included. Folders that may hold your own files, like Insomnia’s local data, are listed as Possible and stay unchecked until you check them yourself.

Questions and answers

Will MacWashing delete my own files when it removes Insomnia?

No. The Uninstaller checks only what belongs to the app: its settings, caches, logs and background items. Folders that may hold your own files are listed as Possible and stay unchecked until you check them yourself, and apps go to the Trash by default, so you can put them back.

What if Insomnia is still running?

MacWashing waits for it to quit, or quits it at your request, and only then removes its files.

Is it free to uninstall Insomnia with MacWashing?

Yes, within the free trial: System Junk and the Uninstaller free up to 25 GB in total, with no account or card needed.

Will I lose my collections if I uninstall Insomnia?

Cloud Sync projects stay on Insomnia’s servers and Git Sync projects in your repository. Local Vault and Scratch Pad projects are only on this Mac: export them before you delete the data folder.

Does deleting the app delete my Insomnia account?

No. Your account and the projects synced to the cloud stay on Insomnia’s servers. Deleting the app only removes it from this Mac.

Can I reinstall Insomnia later?

Yes. Download it again and sign in to get your cloud projects back. Data you exported can be brought back with Import.
