How to uninstall Evernote on Mac completely

Your notes are stored in your Evernote account, so deleting the app doesn’t delete them, as long as they have synced. On the Mac, Evernote keeps a local copy of your notes, a cache, settings, logs and a few add-ons for printing and Safari. Here is how to remove all of it safely.

Uninstaller: a list of apps sorted by size with when each was last opened, Google Chrome selected with its app and cache sizes
  1. Open MacWashing and choose Uninstaller in the sidebar.
  2. Click Show Apps and check Evernote in the list.
  3. Click Remove and confirm. Files that may be yours are listed as Possible and stay unchecked.

Before you start: sync and back up

Evernote’s help asks you to make sure your notes are synced before you remove the app’s data, and to back up your account first. Open Evernote with an internet connection and check that your notes look right on Evernote Web.

To keep a copy on your Mac, export your notes:

  1. In Evernote, select a notebook or the notes you want to keep.
  2. Right-click the selection and choose Export….
  3. Choose a format (ENEX or HTML) and click Export.

Evernote exports up to 100 notes at a time, or whole notebooks. An ENEX file can be imported back into Evernote later.

Delete Evernote in Finder

Evernote has no uninstaller of its own. Its help describes removing the app this way:

  1. Quit Evernote: press Command-Q.
  2. Open Finder › Applications and drag Evernote to the Trash.
  3. Restart your Mac.

This removes the app only. Its files in your Library folder stay. They are listed below.

What Evernote leaves behind

All of these are in the Library folder inside your home folder:

  • ~/Library/Application Support/Evernote — Evernote’s data, including the local copy of your notes.
  • ~/Library/Caches/com.evernote.Evernote — the cache.
  • ~/Library/Preferences/com.evernote.Evernote.plist — settings.
  • ~/Library/Logs/Evernote — logs.
  • ~/Library/Preferences/com.evernote.ENAttachmentToPDFHelper.plist and ~/Library/Caches/com.evernote.ENAttachmentToPDFHelper — settings and cache of Evernote’s PDF helper.
  • ~/Library/PDF Services/Save PDF to Evernote — the Save PDF to Evernote item in the PDF menu of the Print dialog.
  • ~/Library/Safari/Extensions/Evernote Web Clipper.safariextz — the Web Clipper for Safari from older versions.

Notes that haven’t synced yet exist only in ~/Library/Application Support/Evernote. Delete this folder only after you have checked your notes on Evernote Web or exported the ones you need.

Remove the leftovers by hand

  1. In Finder, choose Go › Go to Folder (Shift-Command-G), type a path from the list above and press Return.
  2. Move the folder or file to the Trash.
  3. Repeat for the other paths.
  4. Restart your Mac, then empty the Trash.

With MacWashing, it’s one click

Uninstaller: a list of apps sorted by size with when each was last opened, Google Chrome selected with its app and cache sizes

The Uninstaller in MacWashing knows the files Evernote creates in your Library folder, its printing and Safari add-ons included, and removes them together with the app. Folders that may hold your own notes, like those of the App Store version, are listed as Possible and stay unchecked until you check them yourself.

Questions and answers

Will MacWashing delete my own files when it removes Evernote?

No. The Uninstaller checks only what belongs to the app: its settings, caches, logs and background items. Folders that may hold your own files are listed as Possible and stay unchecked until you check them yourself, and apps go to the Trash by default, so you can put them back.

What if Evernote is still running?

MacWashing waits for it to quit, or quits it at your request, and only then removes its files.

Is it free to uninstall Evernote with MacWashing?

Yes, within the free trial: System Junk and the Uninstaller free up to 25 GB in total, with no account or card needed.

Will uninstalling Evernote delete my notes?

Not the synced ones. They are stored in your Evernote account, and you can open them on Evernote Web or in the app after a reinstall. Check that everything has synced before you delete the app’s data.

What about local notebooks?

Current Evernote (version 10 and later) has no local notebooks: everything syncs to your account. If you upgraded from the old Evernote app and still had local notebooks, choose Tools › Check for Local Notebooks before you uninstall: it exports them as ENEX files you can import back later.

Can I reinstall Evernote later?

Yes. Download it again from evernote.com and sign in. Your synced notes download back to the Mac.
