How to download and install Microsoft Edge on Mac

Microsoft Edge for Mac is a free browser built on Chromium, and it comes from Microsoft’s website as one installer package for every Mac. Here is how to install it, bring over what you had in another browser and set it up after the first launch.

Open Terminal (Applications › Utilities) and run:

brew install --cask microsoft-edge

Homebrew downloads the app from the developer’s server, checks the file and puts the app in Applications.

Before you download

Microsoft’s Mac installer works on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, so there is no version to choose. You don’t need a Microsoft account to use Edge: signing in only syncs your favorites, passwords and history between devices.

Edge needs macOS 13 Ventura or later. Its installer is a .pkg that runs with administrator rights, so download it only from microsoft.com.

How to install Microsoft Edge

  1. Open the downloaded MicrosoftEdge-….pkg in your Downloads folder.
The first screen of the Microsoft Edge installer
  1. Click Continue, then Install.
  2. Enter your Mac password and click Install Software.
  3. When the installer says it is done, click Close. Edge appears in Applications and opens.

Edge starts with a short setup: you can sign in, import data from another browser or skip all of it.

What to set up after the first launch

  • Favorites and passwords. Open Edge’s Settings, go to Profiles and choose Import browser data, then pick Safari or Chrome.
  • Sync. Sign in with a Microsoft account to get favorites, passwords and history from your other devices.
  • Default browser. System Settings › Desktop & Dock › Default web browser.
  • Updates. Edge updates itself. Settings › About Microsoft Edge shows the version and checks for a new one.
  • The installer. Move the .pkg from Downloads to the Trash once Edge runs.

If Edge won’t install or open

  • The installer stops with an error. Download the .pkg again from Microsoft’s website and make sure you are signed in to macOS as an administrator.
  • Edge won’t install on an older Mac. Check your macOS version in About This Mac: Edge needs macOS 13 or later.
  • Nothing helps. Remove Edge completely, with its profile and caches, and install it again: see how to uninstall Microsoft Edge on Mac.

Questions and answers

Is Microsoft Edge for Mac free?

Yes. Edge is free, with or without a Microsoft account.

Do I need a Microsoft account to use Edge?

No. Edge works without signing in. A Microsoft account only adds sync of favorites, passwords and history with Edge on your other devices.

Do Chrome extensions work in Edge?

Most do. Edge is built on Chromium, like Chrome, so besides its own add-ons store it can install extensions from the Chrome Web Store once you allow extensions from other stores.
