Open Terminal (Applications › Utilities) and run:

brew install --cask readdle-spark

Homebrew downloads the app from the developer’s server, checks the file and puts the app in Applications.

Before you download

Spark’s website gives you one Spark.dmg that runs natively on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, so there is no version to choose. On your Mac the app is called Spark Desktop. Spark is also in the Mac App Store as Spark Mail. Either way the app is free.

Download Spark only from sparkmailapp.com or the Mac App Store. The previous version, Spark Classic, is still offered on the same download page for those who need it.

How to install Spark

  1. Open Spark.dmg in your Downloads folder.
  2. In the window that opens, drag Spark Desktop to the Applications folder.
The Spark disk image window: Spark and the Applications folder to drag it to
  1. Eject the Spark disk: click the eject button next to it in the Finder sidebar.
  2. Open Spark Desktop from Applications and click Open when macOS asks about an app downloaded from the internet.
  3. Enter your email address and sign in to your mail account. Add more accounts later in Spark’s settings.

What to set up after the first launch

  • Notifications. macOS asks whether Spark may send notifications. Allow them to hear about new mail. You can change it later in System Settings › Notifications.
  • Default email app. To open email links in Spark, choose it as the default email reader in the settings of Apple’s Mail app.
  • Opening at login. If you don’t want Spark to start with your Mac, turn it off in System Settings › General › Login Items.
  • The installer. Move Spark.dmg from Downloads to the Trash once Spark runs.

If Spark won’t install or open

  • «Spark Desktop is damaged and can’t be opened». The download was incomplete. Delete the file and download it again from sparkmailapp.com.
  • Spark doesn’t start on an older Mac. Check your macOS version in About This Mac: the version from the website needs macOS 11.6 or later.
  • You can’t find Spark in Applications. Look for Spark Desktop: that is the app’s name on your Mac.
