Is CleanMyMac safe?

In our tests CleanMyMac offered to remove 2 things that could break something — marked ⚠ in the charts above.

  • Language Files — in 4 of 5 tests, 1 MB – 28 MBTranslations inside the installed apps' own bundles. Removing them is not cleaning junk — it changes signed apps, which can then fail their signature check or lose languages until reinstalled or updated.
  • Universal Binaries — in every test, 160 MB – 697 MB, not checked by defaultThe Intel half of the installed apps' executables. Stripping it rewrites the apps themselves and breaks their code signatures.

MacWashing removes only what its rules database knows, and leaves alone what it can’t explain. Apps and large files go to the Trash by default, so they can be put back.
